Reddit in AI answers: which sources actually get cited
Reddit is treated as the most cited source in AI answers, and the studies on it disagree by a factor of ten. Which domains actually appear, why forums rank so high, and which of those sources can be influenced at all.
Reddit is a social media platform where users write in communities separated by topic. These communities are called subreddits. The platform carries the nickname front page of the internet.
Every forum of this kind lives on contributions from its members. On Reddit those are posts, comments, images and videos, written by users under a pseudonym.
Since AI systems began naming sources under their answers, reddit.com has turned up in almost every analysis of those source lists.
A standard claim has grown out of that. It says Reddit is the most cited source on the internet, so a brand has to be present there.
The first half of that claim can be checked. The second half does not follow from it.
This post compares eleven surveys on the question of which platforms AI systems name as a source. They come from nine providers. After that it sorts which of these sources can be influenced on purpose at all.
It is written for SEO managers, marketing leads and founders who decide where a visibility budget goes. For all three roles a budget question hangs on that sorting.
What counts as a source in this post
A source here is an address that an AI system names as evidence under or beside its answer. The technical term for it is citation.
The available surveys each count something slightly different. That is why the terms come first.
The difference between a mention and a citation
A mention is the naming of a name in the answer text. A citation is the linked evidence for it.
The two come apart. Semrush analysed 126 million US prompts from January to April 2026 for the AI Visibility Index. At Gemini the overlap between named brands and cited domains sits at around 30 per cent in places.
A brand can therefore stand in the text without appearing as a source under the answer. How such namings can be assessed is covered in the post on AI Mentions.
Why domain and URL produce different figures
A count per URL produces different values than a count per domain. A provider that counts every cited address separately gets many small entries for reddit.com. A provider that sums up at domain level gets one large entry.
On top of that comes the reference base. Three of them are in circulation:
the share of a domain in all counted citations
the share of a domain in the citations of the 50 strongest sources
the share of answers in which a domain appears at all
A value of 18.5 per cent under the second definition and a value of 2.2 per cent under the first can describe the same situation. Leaving the reference base out creates a contradiction the data does not support.
Which domains turn up as sources in AI answers
Four large analyses are available. They measure different systems, different questions and different periods.
What Ahrefs measured for the AI Overviews
Ahrefs analysed over three million US prompts across all topics in July 2026. Collection ran through its own product Brand Radar.
The metric is called Mention Share. It denotes the share of one domain in the summed citations of the 50 strongest sources.

The spread stands out. No single domain gets past 8 per cent in this way of counting.
What Yext measured for location based queries
Yext analysed 6.8 million citations, collected from 1.6 million queries each to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The collection period ran from 1 July to 31 August 2025.
The queries were location based. Collection ran through the provider's own platform, at customer and prospect locations worldwide.

What Pew measured against normal search
The Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 real searches by 900 US adults in March 2025. An AI summary appeared in 12,593 of those searches.
Pew counted the sources of both result formats. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together supplied 15 per cent of the sources in the AI summaries. The same three sites supplied 17 per cent in the normal search results.
Two side findings from the same survey place that. Government sites ending in .gov supplied 6 per cent of the sources in the summaries and 2 per cent in the normal results. News sites reached 5 per cent in both formats.
88 per cent of the summaries named three or more sources. Only 1 per cent rested on a single one.

The four values cannot be converted into one another. They answer four different questions.
The claim "Reddit is the most cited source" under a fact check
This claim carries part of the market for AI visibility. It deserves a check of its own.
How wide the spread of the measured values is
The lowest documented value sits at around 2 per cent, the highest at 18.5 per cent. That is a factor of about nine.
Both figures are correct for their survey. Neither of them transfers to a different selection of questions.
Where the differences come from
Three causes explain the spread, and they work together:
The selection of questions. Location based queries lead to directories, general questions about experience lead to forums.
The reference base. A share of the top 50 is a different figure from a share of all citations.
The system measured. Perplexity cites Reddit almost four times as often as ChatGPT in the Profound analysis.
On top of that comes the market. All four large analyses measure English language queries, mostly from the United States.
What survives of the claim
Documented is that reddit.com stands among the most named domains in every analysis checked. Documented as well is that no single domain reaches more than 8 per cent in a count across all citations.
Undocumented is a transferable ranking of source types. About your own industry and your own questions none of these surveys says anything.
Not this: "Reddit is the most cited source, so you need a Reddit presence."
Better: "Reddit sits high in US wide analyses. For our own questions that holds once we have measured it."
Why forums sit so high in AI answers
Forums are overrepresented in these lists, measured against their share of the web. Three reasons explain it, and none of them has anything to do with search engine optimisation.
The type of question decides the type of source
A question about an experience leads to a different source than a question about a definition. Someone who wants to know how a product holds up day to day gets discussions. Someone looking for a year gets Wikipedia.
That shows up in the data. SE Ranking collected 30,000 commercial keywords in the United States on 1 December 2025, and 22,729 of them returned an AI Overview. Review platforms supplied 8.5 per cent of all links there and appeared in 34.5 per cent of the answers.
Five platforms covered 88 per cent of those links. Gartner Peer Insights led with 26.0 per cent, ahead of G2 with 23.1 per cent and Capterra with 17.8 per cent.
With commercial questions the source list therefore shifts towards reviews. Forums move into the background there.
What makes a Reddit discussion usable for a language model
The build of the platform delivers exactly the structure a model needs for an answer.
Every discussion starts with a post inside a subreddit. Comments sit below it in a tree. Registered users create text posts, links, images, videos and polls.
Users rate every post and every comment. An upvote lifts it, a downvote lowers it. Out of this voting comes the karma score of a user, split into post karma and comment karma.
The members of the platform are called Redditors. Their votes determine which comment stands at the top and which one slides down.
For a language model that adds up to one question, several answers and a ranking of those answers by people. Volunteer moderators enforce the community rules of each subreddit and remove what breaks them.
An editorial article does not deliver that structure. It delivers a checked statement, and for other types of question that is the better evidence.
On top of that comes the breadth. Subreddits cover technology, sport, news, travel and hundreds of further topics, from large public forums to narrow specialist groups. The Ask Me Anything format brings experts into the same structure, with questions from the community and answers from the invited person.
The pattern holds for news and debates as well. Opinions, experience and counterarguments sit next to one another in a single thread.
Licensing deals move source lists more than optimisation does
This point does not appear in most guides, and it explains more than any text optimisation.
The Columbia Journalism Review describes in an analysis of 2 October 2025 that Reddit announced a licensing deal with Google worth 60 million dollars a year in February 2024. The agreement with OpenAI is estimated there at around 70 million dollars a year.
A second case can be watched in the German market. The Berlin think tank Agora Digitale Transformation collected 4,570 links from 625 news queries to five AI systems in its study of 8 July 2026, on five consecutive working days from 4 to 8 May 2026.
At ChatGPT, 264 citations went to welt.de. No other domain came close at that system. The study traces this back to the cooperation between Axel Springer and OpenAI, which has been in place since 2023.
A sober reading follows from that. Part of the top places in these lists is negotiated and paid for, rather than written into being.
For a single brand this means the top of the list sits out of reach. The interesting part starts below it.
How ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode differ in their sources
The four surfaces get treated as one field in the market. In their sources they differ clearly.
How many sources a system names per answer
The Agora survey counted this for German language news queries. Google AI Overview named almost twice as many sources as Gemini.
System
Sources per query
Google AI Overview
10.1
Perplexity

Claude
7.2
ChatGPT
6.2
Gemini
5.6
Semrush arrives at different values for US queries. In the AI Visibility Index, ChatGPT names 15 sources per answer on average and Gemini names three.
The two surveys do not contradict each other. They measure different languages, different topics and different points in time.
For practice the direction counts. A system with three sources per answer leaves less room than one with ten.
Which domain leads at which system
Semrush analysed 230,000 prompts sent to ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, over thirteen weeks from 14 July to 12 October 2025. Reported are the 25 domains that turned up most often among the citations.
System
Leading domains
ChatGPT Search
Wikipedia and Reddit, with a wide gap before September
Google AI Mode
Perplexity
Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH, Microsoft
A second measurement is available for AI Mode. SE Ranking collected 10,000 keywords in the United States on 20 June 2025. There indeed.com led with 1.8 per cent. Wikipedia followed with 1.6 per cent and reddit.com with 1.5 per cent.
Technically the most frequent address was google.com with 5.7 per cent of all citations. 97.9 per cent of those links pointed to company profiles in Google Maps.
What the system comparison means for measurement
A visibility measurement that queries one system describes that one system. Appearing as a source at Perplexity says nothing about Gemini.
The Agora survey shows this in the exclusive domains too. Claude cited 113 domains that no other system named, Google AI Overview cited 112. ChatGPT reached 36.
For the choice of systems the same question applies as for the keywords. Which system does your own audience use?
How many sources each system names per answer. The narrower the selection, the harder the competition for a place in it.
How stable the source lists are over time
This question gets asked rarely. A list that looks different a few weeks later does not work as the basis for an annual budget.
Three runs on the same day, 9.2 per cent shared addresses
SE Ranking sent the same set of 10,000 keywords to Google AI Mode three times on 20 June 2025. The three runs took place on the same day.
Across all three runs, 9.2 per cent of the cited addresses matched. At domain level it was 14.7 per cent. For 2,006 keywords, which is 21.2 per cent, there was not a single shared address.
Comparing two runs at a time, the overlap sat at 18.5 to 19 per cent of the addresses. The leading domains stayed stable in this. The share of google.com moved only between 5.5 and 5.7 per cent.
A clear split follows from that. The ranking of the large platforms holds up. The single citation of a single page does not.
The Reddit drop at ChatGPT in September 2025
Over a longer period the ranking moves as well. Semrush watched this across its thirteen weeks.
ChatGPT named Reddit in just under 60 per cent of all answers in early August 2025. By mid September the value sat at around 10 per cent.
Before September, ChatGPT cited Wikipedia and Reddit about five times as often as the next placed domains. After that the gap had gone. At the other systems measured, the drop did not occur.
OpenAI has published no reason for it. For planning, the event itself counts.
What the swings mean for planning
A measure built on a single platform hangs on a decision somebody else makes. A model change can void it inside a week.
A measure built on several independent pieces of evidence survives such a change. That is the difference between a platform bet and reputation work.
In our projects the measured source list of a single brand has never matched the published rankings, and I have stopped expecting it to.

What has been measured for the German speaking market
All the analyses named so far cover English language queries. Two surveys are available for the German market, and both of them show a different picture.
The systems that cite less journalism fall back on state sources more often. The study names bundesregierung.de, bundestag.de and auswaertiges-amt.de for that.
The distribution is worth a second look. 248 of the 544 cited domains appeared exactly once across the whole survey. The study describes this as a power law distribution.
Forums do not appear among the cited groups of actors in this survey. At Google AI Overview, YouTube stood in second place with 116 citations.
The SEOlyze analysis of the German AI Overviews
SEOlyze collected 11,180 keywords on google.de on 16 July 2026 and recorded 43,035 citations. Measurement ran on one cut off date, on desktop, down to organic result depth 50.
YouTube led with 6,499 citations, which is 15.1 per cent of all sources. Wikipedia reached 0.4 per cent. Public authorities and universities together reached 1.2 per cent.
The ten strongest domains held 22.9 per cent of all citations. 11 per cent of the citations went to domains that did not stand in the top 50 for the same keyword.
Reddit does not appear as a separate item in this analysis. That is itself a statement about the German market.
Where figures are missing for the German market
A German language survey on the share of forums in AI citations does not exist. Neither for gutefrage.net nor for reddit.com is there a value with disclosed methodology.
A German version of the Yext analysis of source types is missing as well. Anyone who wants to know the distribution for their own market has to measure it themselves.
This gap is an opportunity at the same time. Your own analysis with a disclosed period and a disclosed population is citable and does not age on somebody else's schedule.

Platforms with user generated content
Reddit, Quora and comparable forums live on contributions from their users. Upvotes, downvotes and moderators decide the visibility of a contribution.
Reddit Inc. earns its money through advertising and through the paid membership Reddit Premium. Paying for visibility there means buying ad slots. An advertisement is not a source an AI system cites from.
Placing your own contributions instead works against the community rules of most subreddits. Removed contributions do not exist for a language model.
Not this: "We are building a Reddit presence so that ChatGPT cites us."
Better: "We make sure there is something to report about us, on pages whose editorial team we can reach."
Wikipedia and the notability criteria
A Wikipedia entry comes about through volunteer authors. The notability criteria of the respective language version decide on inclusion.
These criteria call for independent reporting about the company. An entry is therefore a consequence of media presence.
The order cannot be turned around. Whoever wants the entry first is missing the precondition for it.
Directories and review platforms
This group is the most underrated one. Directories and listings supplied 42 per cent of the citations for location based queries in the Yext analysis.
With commercial software questions, review platforms take over that role. Per the SE Ranking analysis, G2, Capterra, Gartner Peer Insights, Software Advice and TrustRadius together supplied 88 per cent of the review links.
These entries can be maintained. The work sits in keeping addresses, opening hours, services and ratings current.
Your own website
44 per cent of the citations in the Yext analysis came from the websites of the brands themselves. That is the largest single item of that survey.
This share stands under full control. What is written there as facts, figures and definitions is decided by the brand itself.
What a passage has to deliver to be quotable is covered in the post on Generative Engine Optimization. How the generative features of Google Search work is explained in the post on AI Overviews.
Video and network profiles
YouTube and LinkedIn stand high in several analyses. In the German AI Overviews, YouTube led the SEOlyze list with 15.1 per cent of all citations.
A channel of your own can be set up and filled. Reach is decided by the platform after that.
This group therefore sits in the middle. The publication can be planned, the visibility of the publication cannot.
Not this: "We upload videos so that we get cited in the AI Overviews."
Better: "We upload videos on the questions our customers ask in sales calls, and after four weeks we measure whether they appear as a source."
Editorial trade media
Trade media, industry portals and consumer media are the one group in this table where a date and a price are fixed in advance.
They meet the condition every system places on a source at the same time. They are indexed, publicly reachable and editorially run.
And they feed the other groups. A trade article is the basis for a Wikipedia entry, a piece of evidence in a discussion and a quote in an answer.
The bookable part of the source list
This is exactly where our own service sits. GetMentioned is a link building agency with its own placement marketplace. Full service in link building, not full-service SEO.
Why editorial placements can be planned
With a booked placement the publisher is fixed before the booking. The date is fixed. The price is fixed.
For every publisher you see topic, organic traffic, SEO data, GetMentioned Score and price per placement with us. The price you see in the marketplace is the price you pay.
The GetMentioned Score brings SEO values, authority, price performance and topical fit together. A strong domain on its own is not yet a good linking site.
Which publishers fit a topic is derived by MentionIQ from website, competitors and important keywords. Anyone who wants to hand the whole build over gets it from us as full service.
In our experience this pays off for brands that barely appear on their own topics outside their own domain. For brands without a target page tied to revenue, the budget goes further elsewhere.
What forum links deliver and where their limit sits
Forum links bring visitors, mentions in discussions and variety in the link profile. We place them in active, moderated forums with a topical connection.
The selection follows fixed thresholds. In our forum link offering we place in forums with at least 1,000 visitors a month and at least DR 15 or DA 15.
Reddit and GuteFrage are explicitly outside this offering. The community decides on every contribution on both platforms, and a promise about how long a link stands would not hold.
A forum link usually carries less authority than an editorial backlink. Both formats have their place, and the order depends on the goal.
How to recognise a placement that holds
Five features separate a placement that holds from one that disappears into the archive:
The topic of the publisher touches the topic of the target page.
The domain has organic traffic of its own, rather than metrics alone.
The article sits in the editorial section, rather than in a link list.
The anchor text describes the content of the target page.
The link profile of the publisher shows no conspicuous patterns.
These features apply unchanged to booked references and to ones that arose on their own. Which free sources carry alongside them is covered in the post on free backlinks.
Quality beats volume. Ten fitting mentions work harder than a thousand arbitrary ones.
Which brands gain from work on AI sources
This analysis pays off where a target page carries revenue and does not appear in AI answers. Brands outside that situation get more out of a different budget line.
Typical situations from practice
In our experience six starting positions come up again and again:
A target page has ranked between position 6 and 20 for months and appears in no AI answer.
Competitors get named in the same answers and the brand itself does not.
Nobody reports on the brand's core topics outside its own domain.
A new topic cluster is meant to build authority in its field.
The brand stands in directories with outdated details.
The team has published three assets and measured no links to them.
The work makes less sense for pages without a revenue connection. There the budget goes further into the target pages that actually sell.
What counts in this analysis for which role
The decision is rarely made alone. Three roles sit at the table in practice, and each of them asks a different question.
For SEO managers and heads of SEO, control over target page, anchor text and publisher counts. On top of that comes the question of how many placements can be delivered in a quarter.
For marketing leads the budget logic counts. A fixed price per publisher can be planned, an open outcome on somebody else's platform cannot.
For founders and management the internal effort counts. A booked placement costs approval time, a community presence of your own costs ongoing working hours without a fixed date.
Which data you need for your own source list
None of these eleven surveys says anything about your questions. This list you have to collect yourself, and the effort for it is manageable.
Which data you need
a list of the questions your audience actually asks
the systems that this audience uses
the sources named under every answer, with a date
the assignment of every source to a type
the same run again after four weeks
Where the data comes from
The questions come from sales, from support and from the Search Console. The answers come from the systems themselves, queried in a run of your own.
For ongoing measurement there are providers such as Rankscale and Peec.ai. A table with thirty questions is enough for a first inventory.
Assigning a type is what makes the analysis usable. Six categories are enough, namely forums, review platforms, directories, trade media, Wikipedia and the brands' own websites.
What can be derived from it
The budget decision follows from the distribution. A high share of directories argues for maintaining listings.
A high share of trade media argues for placements. A high share of forums argues that this question is out of reach for bookings.
The second run after four weeks delivers the most useful result. It shows how stable your own source list is.
Four figures on AI sources that do not survive a check
Sentences travel through posts around this topic that read well and hold up badly. Four of them stand here.
"21 per cent of all AI citations go to YouTube"
The value comes from the Ahrefs analysis and denotes a Mention Share there. What is meant is the share of the citations of the 50 strongest sources.
The share of all citations sits well below that. Profound reports 1.9 per cent for youtube.com in the AI Overviews.
Reported correctly the statement reads: "Among the 50 most cited sources of the AI Overviews, 21.1 per cent went to YouTube in July 2026."
"AI systems prefer forums over normal search"
Pew checked exactly that. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit supplied 15 per cent of the sources in the AI summaries and 17 per cent in the normal search results.
The share is practically the same. A preference for user generated content cannot be read out of it.
Reported correctly the statement reads: "In Pew's US panel the share of these three sites differed between the two result formats by two percentage points."
"Posting on Reddit regularly gets you cited by ChatGPT"
No survey stands behind this statement. Documented is a connection at brand level and not at post level.
SE Ranking published an analysis of 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages on 24 November 2025, measured against 100,000 prompts from 20 niches. Brands with a strong presence on Quora reached 7.0 citations on average there. Brands with minimal presence reached 1.7. For Reddit the range runs from 1.8 to 7.0.
That is a correlation. A large presence in forums belongs to well known brands, and those have more traffic, more mentions and older domains at the same time. SE Ranking points out itself that the factors depend on one another.
Reported correctly the statement reads: "In this analysis a strong forum presence goes together with more citations. A cause is not shown by it."
"The list of most cited sources is stable"
The Reddit share at ChatGPT fell from just under 60 to around 10 per cent of answers inside six weeks in the Semrush measurement. At the level of single addresses, three runs on the same day shared 9.2 per cent.
Stable is the rough ranking of the large platforms alone. Everything below that moves.
Reported correctly the statement reads: "The leading group of platforms stays similar over months. Which address appears in a single answer changes from run to run."

Conclusion: know the source list, work the bookable part
Eleven surveys show the same pattern. Forums, video platforms and networks stand high, and their shares move by a factor of nine depending on question, system and point in time.
The top of these lists is out of reach for a single brand. Part of it rests on licensing deals between platforms and AI providers.
The reachable part sits below it. Your own website, maintained directory entries and editorial articles in trade media cover the source types a brand decides on itself.
Anyone who wants to know which of these types counts for their own questions measures thirty questions once and repeats the run after four weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is Reddit the most cited source in AI answers?
Reddit stands among the most named domains in every analysis checked. The measured shares run from around 2 to 18.5 per cent, depending on the selection of questions and the reference base.
Which source types do AI systems cite most often?
A transferable ranking does not exist. In the Yext analysis of location based queries, 44 per cent of the citations came from the websites of the brands themselves and 42 per cent from directories.
Do ChatGPT, Perplexity and the AI Overviews differ in their sources?
Yes, and clearly so. Per the Profound analysis Wikipedia leads at ChatGPT with 7.8 per cent, Reddit leads at Perplexity with 6.6 per cent and Reddit leads at the AI Overviews with 2.2 per cent.
How stable are these source lists?
Similar over months at platform level, moving at address level. Three runs of the same keyword set on the same day shared 9.2 per cent of the cited addresses in the SE Ranking measurement.
Are there figures for the German speaking market?
Two surveys are available, from Agora Digitale Transformation for news queries and from SEOlyze for the German AI Overviews. A value for the share of forums is missing for Germany.
Can mentions on Reddit be bought?
Users and moderators decide on the visibility of a contribution there. Reddit sells ad slots, and an advertisement is not a source an AI system cites from.
What can be booked instead?
Placements in editorial trade media, with a fixed publisher, a fixed date and a fixed price. Directory and review profiles can be maintained on top of that.
